While the Gem state isn’t known for its natural disasters, that certainly doesn’t mean it’s an entirely safe haven from nature’s fury. Earthquakes, flooding and bushfires can actually occur quite frequently in Idaho but, possibly due to the state’s sparse and scattered population, the devastating effects can be less than in other regions. Living in a low disaster prone state may make it easy to become complacent about the exclusions on a standard Idaho home insurance policy. Apart from some natural disasters here are a few other typical exclusions you may have overlooked on your home insurance policy:

  • 1. Antiques, precious jewelry and valuable collections are not usually adequately covered by a standard policy. You must request additional coverage for expensive or unique items in your possession.

  • 2. Damage resulting from sewage backflow may be a nasty problem under any circumstances, but even nastier is the shock of finding the repair costs are not covered by your insurance.

  • 3. Damage that has occurred due to lack of maintenance typically isn’t covered by your home owner’s policy.

  • 4. Many insurance providers have added mold coverage to their exclusion list, so if you believe your home is at risk of mold you may need to add mold coverage to your home insurance package.

Do not assume a standard home insurance policy covers all potential damage that may occur to your home and possessions. Not being aware of your Idaho home insurance policy exclusions may be a costly mistake.
